Children’s Advocacy Counselor
Position Available

TennCare Advocacy Program (www.tenncareadvocacy.org), a service of Health Assist Tennessee, a nonprofit corporation, offers one full-time counselor position in our Children’s Advocacy department. EOE

This position is a full-time, permanent position—40 hours per week. Schedule will be from 9am-5pm with one-hour paid lunch. EOE

Position Benefits for Full-time Positions:

Basic Function:

Provide advocacy services to children in state custody, and information and advocacy to involved adults. The Children’s Advocacy Counselor is under the direct supervision of the Program Director.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Staff the TennCare Children’s Advocacy Line as scheduled by the Program Director. Review permanency plans, staffing reports, notices of action, and any other relevant documentation for children in state custody, as assigned.
2. When appropriate, prepare and file appeals on behalf of children in state custody, completing appropriate paperwork. Follow the case through to completion.
3. Contact by phone, fax, or e-mail appropriate State personnel or other service providers, to ensure that the health and mental health needs of children in state custody are addressed.
4. Document all calls or contacts received from and made to or on behalf of children in state custody. Participate in planning and/or discussion sessions with key State or other agency personnel for the purpose of reporting findings relating to services rendered to children in state custody.
5. Maintain absolute confidentiality regarding children or their significant others that might be revealed in the working of a case. Maintain absolute confidentiality regarding any client or, or caller to, the Advocacy Program.
6. Assist with training staff of the Advocacy Program, and make presentations about and otherwise represent the Advocacy Program in meetings or public forums, as mutually agreed upon with the Program Director.
7. Abide by all policies and guidelines established to ensure the smooth functioning of the Advocacy Program.
8. Provide additional assistance to the Advocacy Program or in other related areas as requested by the Program Director or Executive Director.
9. Attend all training sessions, staff meetings, and other functions as required.

Document all calls or contacts received from and made to or on behalf of clients of the Advocacy Program.

Maintain absolute confidentiality regarding TennCare enrollees or any other individual that might be revealed during the working of a case.

Assist with training staff of the Advocacy Program, and make presentations about and otherwise represent the Advocacy Program in meetings or public forums, as mutually agreed upon with supervisory staff.

Abide by all policies and guidelines established to ensure the smooth functioning of the Advocacy Program.

Provide additional assistance to the Advocacy Program or in other related areas as requested by the Program Director or Executive Director.

Attend all training sessions, staff meetings, and other functions as required.

Requirements:

  • College degree required.
  • Computer skills: MS Outlook and Word. Ability to learn customized databases.
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Strong desire to ensure full exercise of benefits and appeal rights for all enrollees.
  • Experience with consumer related issues, or in health or mental health field preferred.
  • Crisis intervention training and experience helpful.
  • Ability to work effectively with a variety of people.
  • Ability to accept supervision in a professional manner.
  • Ability to work as a team member.
  • Strong, realistic self-concept.

Part-time Permanent

* Advocacy Counselor, Refugee Services (Vietnamese): 20 hours per week, flexible scheduling between the hours of 8 am – 6 pm, Monday - Friday

Basic Function: Provide bi-lingual (English and Vietnamese) information and advocacy services to clients of the TennCare Advocacy Program. The Advocacy Counselor is under the direct supervision of the Advocacy Services Coordinator.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Staff the TennCare Advocacy Line as scheduled. Make follow-up calls to clients of the Advocacy Program, and appropriate State or other service providers, to ensure that clients get all appropriate TennCare services.

Document all calls or contacts received from and made to or on behalf of clients of the Advocacy Program.

Maintain absolute confidentiality regarding TennCare enrollees or any other individual that might be revealed during the working of a case.

Assist with training staff of the Advocacy Program, and make presentations about and otherwise represent the Advocacy Program in meetings or public forums, as mutually agreed upon with supervisory staff.

Assist with translation of materials from English into Vietnamese as requested by the Bureau of TennCare or as needed by the Advocacy Program or other agencies.

Abide by all policies and guidelines established to ensure the smooth functioning of the Advocacy Program.

Provide additional assistance to the Advocacy Program or in other related areas as requested by the Program Director or Executive Director.

Attend all training sessions, staff meetings, and other functions as required.
